Although the University of Missouri is here, Columbia is definitely not a college town. Shelter Insurance and State Farm together employ over 2,000 people, Oscar Mayer another 600+ and other larger industrial firms employ another 3,000.
  Columbia is a working town, not a tourist town. There is an old ca 1800s farm house to look at, a couple gardens and an interesting trail named the MKT Nature & Fitmess Trail which is almost 5 miles in length.
  The MKT Trail begins in the city and becomes progressively 'rural' crossing many little bridges. There is usually a lot of wild life to be seen (apparently used to the presence of humans) and there are even nearly two dozen fitness stations for folks desiring to limber up or even work out.
