  It is sometimes surprising to realize how interesting a small town can be. Colby is a good example of American 'can-do' attitude. When you pass through on a mild summer's day with just a gently breeze rippling through the miles and miles of sun flowers it is very difficult to imagine what the weather can be like - summer or winter. The ancestors of many of the folks, here, came out with their plows and other farming tools to 'scratch' the good earth and make a living. That they did with great success despite the storms and many other impediments.

  Midway between Colby's two exits on the north side of I-70 is the Prairie Museum of Art and History. Beautifully sited on a 24 acre campus, this place is a treasure trove of interesting stories of people, their hardships and successes. We even learned that several books have been written about Colby and life here. The two, most notable (to us) are Land of The Windmills; A Photographic Perspective by Helen Frahm (published by the local historic society) and Lady Doctor on a Homestead - the bio of Mary Amelia Hay, M.D., who administered to the health needs of Thomas County from 1879 to 1890.
