End of the road ...

National Road - Vandalia was the end of the country's first national highway. Completed in 1852 after forty years of construction, it stretched from Cumberland, Maryland, to Vandalia. Authorized by President Thomas Jefferson, the purpose was to expedite the transport of merchandise and other goods from east to west (this was the 'far west', then).
In the late 1920's, twelve statues were erected along the original route of the National Highway. The twelfth, here in Vandalia, can be seen at the southwest corner of the Vandalia Statehouse grounds.

Vandalia Statehouse - This was the official statehouse of the State of Illinois from 1836 through March of 1839 when the state capital was moved to Springfield. It is a Federal-style building and has been completely restored. For more information, phone 618-283-1161..
