This area of Colorado
(and Utah) is dinosaur country and the folks here in Grand Junction like
to say: "Here is where it's all at." Dinosaur Valley Museum - This is a working paleontology laboratory. Here you can view fossils from many important discoveries throughout the western United States. A noteworthy feature is the display of realistic "... scientifically recreated, robotic dinosaurs with moving bodies and terrifying roars". (from a page of Grand Junction CVB website. Read more at PressKit. Museum of Western Colorado - A science museum offering archeological digs and a variety of dinosaur exhibits. It also features a good cross section of exhibits about life in western Colorado from Native American, European pioneers and present day periods. More at wcmuseum. For out-of-doors adventures and sights you might visit:
Dominguez Canyon
- A spectacular red rock canyon. |
Grand Junction has another distinction; this is wine country. And you can visit (and enjoy a little 'tasting') several of the area wineries. Colorado Cellars - Located in the Grand Valley of Grand Junction, this winery is Colorado's oldest winery. Picnic tables are available and wine tasting can be enjoyed Monday through Friday from 9a to 4p and Saturday afternoons from noon to 4p. Phont 1-800-848-2812 (toll-free) for more information. Located at 3553 E Road in Paradise. Confre Cellars - Here is an unusual winery. In addition to the usual grape and other fruit wines, Confire Cellars produces mead, a beverage distilled from honey. Open daily from 9:30a to 7p during summer months. Shorter hours the remainder of the year. Phone 1-970-464-1300 for more information. Location: 785 Elberta Ave in Paradise. And for a different adventure, stop by Cross Orchards. Step back for a moment in time in this restored, turn of the century, village. Where once a thriving apple packing business existed is now a historical site complete with fully costumed docents. Operated by the Museum of Western Colorado you can read more at CrossOrchards. |
